Message from the Pastor
“The Twelve Days of Christmas”
In 16th century England after Henry VIII had established the Anglican Church, there was a prosecution of Catholics.

As a result, Catholics were not able to practice their faith openly. During this period, “The Twelve Days of Christmas” was written in England as a catechism song for young Catholics. The hidden meanings of the song’s gifts were intended to help the children remember lessons of their faith. Instead of referring to an earthly suitor, the “true love” mentioned in the song refers to God Himself. The “me” who receives the presents is symbolic of every baptized person. The partridge in a pear tree is Jesus Christ. In the song, Christ is symbolically presented as a mother partridge which feigns injury to decoy predators from her helpless nestlings.

The meaning of the other symbols are:
  • Two turtle doves – the Old and New Testaments
  • Three French hens – Faith, Hope and Charity
  • Four calling birds – the four Gospels
  • Five golden rings – the first five books of the Old Testament, which give the history of man’s fall from grace
  • Six geese-a-laying – the six days of creation
  • Seven swans a-swimming – the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit
  • Eight maids a-milking – the eight Beatitudes
  • Nine ladies dancing – nine choirs of angels
  • Ten lord a-leaping – the Ten Commandments
  • Eleven pipers piping – the eleven faithful Apostles
  • Twelve drummers drumming – the twelve points of belief in the Apostle’s Creed

REMEMBER OUR CHURCH
When you are away from the area traveling, on vacation or just visiting relatives, one thing to keep in mind is that our church is still receiving bills that need to be paid. We all have bills that cannot be ignored. Some of us cannot assist in physically maintaining the church and the grounds. Before we leave or after we return from our travels, let's remember that our obligation to our parish must be met.

A Prayer During Economic Distress
(A message from Bishop Gerald R. Barnes)
Compassionate and Loving God
many of us, your children, are living in great anxiety and fear, and so we come to you. May the power of your love give us the strength to be faithful to the gospel of hope.

May we not despair. May we not turn to ways that are disrespectful of your great love for us. Hear our prayer for our parents, children, spouses, family and friends. Grant your world economic solutions that are based on justice and that bring relief to your flock. Protect our land and its people in this time of anguish.

Forgive us our sins and plant in our hearts a firm purpose to love ourselves and our neighbor, to protect others, and to live peacefully and in harmony with everyone.
We pray for those who are suffering distress, the dispossessed, the jobless, the homeless, and the elderly.
We ask this in Jesus name. Amen.

Bishop Gerald R. Barnes offers a video on the economy.
In response to the continual financial struggles facing our nation, Bishop Gerald Barnes has produced a reflection on the issue. Please take a few minutes to view it and reflect on what the Gospel tells us about this issue. The reflection is
here at this link.
